Massive Bluff for the Win
I won't post winning results anymore since it seems that whenever I do I take a bad swing of beats (might be the poker gods telling me to practice a little more humility) so I will start posting only hand analysis and plays that I felt merits mention.
Here is one at the Metro playing the 25P/50P tables. I had won 4 straight pots recently showing down an AK, AA and 2 pair at the showdown. The other one was a semi-bluff that was successful. On the fifth hand I was in the cutoff with 9-6o and wanted to keep the rush alive so I raised to P300.
The small blind was a somewhat smug and LAG player who calls my raise. My profile for this guy was that he pushes with a marginal advantage and likes to slow play big hands.
The flop comes Qh-2c-7d. I miss the flop all the way and LAG player checks at the flop. I fire one bullet to the tune of P500 and the LAG calls me.
Turn comes 7h and LAG once again checks. I play out the possible hands he could be holding against me:
pocket 2s - which means he is slowplaying the hand since he has a full house on the turn.
trips 7s - he could have easily called me with 7-8s or 6-7s.
pair of queens - I doubted he had this because I felt he would protect top pair and would push.
With his check I pulled in my gut and bet another P1500 to the pot. He takes a few seconds and calls me again! I knew I was done with the hand. He either had a 7 or pocket 2s because nothing else would make sense with that massive call.
Now here is where it gets interesting. The river..... 7c! he checks again and I take a minute to think about my situation.
I had been representing the queen from the very start of the hand. The 3rd 7 makes it unlikely that he was holding quad 7s (although the possibility is there) and if he had pocket 2s then his full house would be reduced to him holding a pair of 2s!!!
9-6o... obviously the only way I could win was to bet at this pot. I took a deep breath and went with my instincts. I pushed all-in for another P3000 and the guy almost goes berserk. He shows his pocket 2s and agonized over how evil this world is and how he could be dealt the only card he didn't want to see. In the end he folds his hand.
I was pretty happy with the outcome and the entire table goads me to showing just one card. I take a sly grin and asked the guy politely "Bro, can I show my hand?" He says "yes" and I show my 6-9o which sent him on massive tilt. Over the next 40 mins I steered out of the guys way as he probably burned through another P5,000 on no-look all-ins and such. Gotta say I never knew putting a guy on tilt could be so much fun!
Now I know why so many people limp in with terrible starting hands. The potential positive ev of sending a person on tilt sometimes makes up for being loose.
